The SOS - Save Our Species Secretariat is based in IUCN global headquarters in Switzerland. The team is charged with the implementation of the SOS mission, including its further development as well as the daily operational management of the portfolio and supporting communications.
Core functions include grant management, capacity building with grantees, administration and communication. Grants are administered according to best in class project management guidelines developed by the SOS Secretariat in consultation with its founding partners.
In keeping with its founding philosophy the Secretariat leverages its relationships with stakeholders to best achieve its operational and strategic aims. The initiative is governed by a Donor Council while a Technical Advisory Group consults on the final selection of projects evaluated by members of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) submitted in response to calls for proposals informed by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™.
This structure allows for streamlining of personnel requirements and processes along with a robust project management process, maximising the percentage of donations that are channelled to grantee species conservation projects.
